“…Before getting the money, Mehta sent out 16,000 e-mails asking prospective investors for funding or advice. Along the way, he and his partner launched and scrapped one business model, then transformed their company entirely…” – How entrepreneurs came up with Jungle Cents by Casey Newton
Wow…16,000 emails! After reading that, I thought about the persistence and patience it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. Many of us would have given up after 50 rejections or 1,000 or even 10,000…but to send out 16,000 emails is exactly why we wrote the Embrace the Struggle mantra. It speaks directly to shifting your focus off the negatives and onto the positives. You must ask yourself, “Is my conviction about my business/product/service stronger than the onslaught of rejections I am receiving?”
There are so many examples of products that exist today after MANY trial and errors, rejections, and even faces bruised from doors slams. Here are just two:
- Take the household cleaning product 409. Do you know why the product is called 409? Well the product developers failed 408 times before coming up with the right formula on the 409th try.
- It took Thomas Edison two long years of failed attempts, and over 6,000 different carbonized plant fibers, looking for a carbon filament before he found the right one for the light bulb.
Each one of us will have different timelines to success. Remember to embrace the struggle, while using the passion you have for what you are doing drive. In the words of Thomas Edison:
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas A. Edison
