I have a lot of talented and successful friends and family who read our book and say, “this is great!” They have been very successful in school and in their jobs and now they want to move on to their own dreams and passions. However, as they start taking the first steps, they are getting frustrated. They wake up earlier but find nothing to do. They sit down to do goal setting but can not think of any meaningful goals. They call me and say, “Man, I really don’t know what I want to do!” I been there and I understand, but don’t give up. As long as you keep pushing yourself to figure it out, you will find it.
From my own personal experiences, it seems the people who have NOT found their passion are the ones who found the traditional school, college, then career easy. This is because they were told that education was the right thing to do, they were successful at it and started to “like” it (Notice the usage of ‘like’ because I am going to revisit it later). Throughout their life, it never became a “burning-need” to figure out what they were passionate about so they continued doing something they were good at. Most straight ‘A’ students do not become CEO’s of companies or millionaires for this very reason. The careers they choose is not a result of passion but of safety. They are not big risk takers and never had to really struggle to be successful. So when they are met with any form of defeat, they easily retreat back to their comfort zone.
On the other hand, you have a student who struggles with school. It can be because they find it difficult or uninteresting. At some point they divert their attention from school. Because there is a constant pressure on them to succeed, they find the things they are passionate about and become very dedicated and focused on it. Since success never came easy for them, if they are met with defeat, they keep pushing because they have learned how to deal with defeat very early in life.
So what am I saying? For those who have allowed their talents and easy success to get them by and create a decent lifestyle for yourself are at a disadvantage. The only thing that will bust you out your comfort zone and motivate you to become great is doing what you love. In any field, when you are only doing it as something you like, there is someone else doing it because that is what they love and they will always work harder than you. When you pursue something for any other reason outside of pure passion, you do not have any desire to sacrifice, work hard, and create greatness. To find out what you really want to do is not the easiest either. But once you figure it out, you will wake up with a smile each and every day. So keep pushing until you figure it out!
